De Los Angeles is a name that has been used in my family since the beginning of the 16th century. It is customary for Spanish Catholic families to name a child after a patron saint or blessed virgin as an offer and gratitude for a safe pregnancy, birth delivery, and for protection throughout the child’s life. I was named after Costa Rica’s patron virgin saint, Virgen de los Angeles.
